Had some terrible news over the weekend. My best friend, M, who is currently six months pregnant, lives in Johannesburg with her partner, R, of 20 years and their two year old son. It was her birthday on Thursday night and he took her out to the movies to see X-men Origins. Coming back to their house after the movie, someone attempted to hijack them, and shot R in the head. So instead of having a nice birthday, M has been at the hospital for the last five days waiting for news on R's prognosis. Got an SMS this morning saying R is now awake and aware of what is going on, which is fantastic news after having major brain surgery. So that is the good. The bad is that he is going to lose his left eye. Rather his eye, than his life, for sure, but still. He will be having surgery on his eye on Wednesday, probably to remove it. I can't help feeling rather useless as I am here in Cape Town, starting work on a new project and unable to to be any kind of support for her. And no, I know it's not about me, but I would like to be able to assist her in any way I could, which is very difficult from the other side of the country. I'm just so mad on her behalf. I'm grateful that they didn't kill him but so angry that a person cannot be safe when leaving and arriving at their own home. I'm also so thankful that their two year old son was not in the car with them. I don't want to be one of those negative people saying the country is going down the tubes, but more and more as I hear stories like this I am feeling like this. R is self-employed and M's not working due to taking time off for maternity leave. So they have a financial problem as well as a result of this senseless act of violence. At the very least I'll be able to lend her some monetary support until R is back on his feet, however long that is going to take. And yes, I completely see the irony of getting shot in the head after coming back from seeing a movie about a character ( Spoilers )Tags: crime, rl Current Location: My office Current Mood: depressed

Of the win So I've been looking for a nice pair of fingerless gloves for this winter as the pair I had last winter are falling apart, and all clicked and nasty looking. Finally found a pair of funky stripey ones at Woolies that come all the way up my forearms. I only wish they were a bit more fitted because they are a bit baggy once past my fingers, but that's a small price to pay for cute, stripey gloves that will stop my fingers wanting to fall off while I type this winter! \o/ Of the fail I've been house sitting again this long weekend, and when that happens I have access to satellite television (cable, for all my non-SA friends) and during my marathon amount of TV watching, some muckety muck from Hollywood was giving her make-up tip of the day. Apparently dove gray is the new black in nail polish colours this season, and she was showing us how to mix it up. Hmmm, I thought, I have a bottle of white I'm not using, and lots of bottles of black (I like non ladylike goth colours on my nails - my toenails are currently black sparkles). Let's mix some up and see what it looks like. In a word, no. Just...no. I am now sporting Zombie fingers. I'll wear it to work tomorrow to show everyone how horrible it looks, then it's a date with acetone for me. The moral of the story? Don't believe what the magic box tells you!! Things that seem like a bad idea when you consider them, usually are. Here's proof: a picture of one of my happy making fingerless gloves on the zombie hand of dooooooom /o\
